Sex, Lies and Crime: Human Trafficking in the Middle East

Sex, Lies and Crime: Human Trafficking in the Middle East: "“Love for Sale”
Reports of wealthy men from gulf countries roaming refugee camps in Jordan have become more common. Desperate to support themselves and their families, Syrian families have been known to sell their young daughters using temporary marriages, known as sigheh, segheh, or mu’ta. Wealthy individuals from Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E. and Kuwait travel to Egypt to purchase women and girls for temporary marriages, facilitated by parents and guardians. Girls as young as 10 have been sold in this manner and later found in the streets of the men’s home countries with no way to return to their families and no one willing to take them in — except for traffickers. These children are throwaway kids, abused, used and discarded when the men are done with them.

Forced prostitution has grown along with the conflict and destabilization of governments in the Middle East. Syrian women who think they will become second wives to Egyptian men instead find themselves in forced prostitution, labor or begging. Facilitated by temporary marriages, Iran, a Tier 3 country not party to the 2000 U.N. Protocol, has a brisk business in forced prostitution among women and children from Syria, Iraq and Iran.

Criminal organizations play a “significant role in trafficking” in Iran, according to the State Department.[iii] Widespread corruption among government officials means trafficking laws are not enforced, and perpetrators face no consequences. Women who have been trafficked into prostitution are liable to be prosecuted for adultery, punishable by death. For these women, prostitution or death are their only choices.

In Iraq, a Tier 2 nation, forced prostitution without temporary marriage is prevalent. Criminal gangs and police kidnap and force women into prostitution or rape them and put it on film, then blackmail them into prostitution. Iraqi taxi drivers have been reported to force Syrian women into prostitution, as have parents, husbands and other family members and trusted people. The victims are subject to repeated rape, torture, arrests, imprisonment and honor killings."

Vancouver Massage Therapist Faces More Charges | 101 KXL: "VANCOUVER, Wash. — Word has spread that a massage therapist touched his clients inappropriately and Valentin Delgado is now facing a lot of new charges.

Investigators first said that he abused three clients at his business “Massage by Valentin” in a Vancouver business park.  19 additional victims came forward, including four in Longivew.  Those cases have been referred to prosecutors in Cowlitz County.  That brings the total to 22.

Delgado, 40, skipped out on a court appearance earlier this month and has jumped bail.  A felony warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Police were worried from the start that there could be more victims because Delgado has worked at five spas in Vancouver and Longview since 2011.  The Washington State Department of Health is considering suspending his license."

China cracks down on strippers at funerals - The Times of India

China cracks down on strippers at funerals - The Times of India: "China's official Xinhua news agency said such performances are typically organised in order to draw a larger crowd at last rites.

One example cited by the ministry of culture was a funeral in north China's Hebei province.

"Two strippers wearing revealing clothes danced on a stage at a public square in our village at night on February 15," an eyewitness surnamed Zhang told the state-run Global Times newspaper earlier this month.

"They first danced passionately and then took off their clothes piece by piece," the man said. "Behind them, an electronic screen was displaying a picture of the deceased with elegiac couplets on either side."

In another case later that month, a troupe in east China's Jiangsu province was detained for funeral performances that drew crowds of as many as 500 local residents, according to provincial news site xichu.net.

The troupe engaged in "erotic performances on the stage with sexual organs exposed and imitating sexual acts," police officer Tang Jinyang told the news site.

Such shows "disrupt the order of the rural cultural market and corrupt the social atmosphere," China's ministry of culture said. "

US blames Dow flash-crash on British-Indian trader, seeks his extradition - The Times of India

US blames Dow flash-crash on British-Indian trader, seeks his extradition - The Times of India: "The trader was identified by the US Justice Department as Navinder Singh Sarao, 37, of Hounslow, in the UK.

Sarao was charged in a federal criminal complaint with one count of wire fraud, 10 counts of commodities fraud, 10 counts of commodities manipulation, and one count of ''spoofing,'' a practice of bidding or offering with the intent to cancel the bid or offer before execution.

According to the complaint, which was unsealed on Tuesday, Sarao allegedly used an automated trading program to manipulate the market for E-Mini S&P 500 futures contracts (E-Minis) on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). E-Minis are stock market index futures contracts based on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index.

Sarao allegedly employed a ''dynamic layering'' scheme to affect the price of E-Minis. By allegedly placing multiple, simultaneous, large-volume sell orders at different price points -- a technique known as ''layering'' -- Sarao created the appearance of substantial supply in the market.

As part of the scheme, Sarao allegedly modified these orders frequently so that they remained close to the market price, and typically cancelled the orders without executing them. When prices fell as a result of this activity, Sarao allegedly sold futures contracts only to buy them back at a lower price. Conversely, when the market moved back upward as the market activity ceased, Sarao allegedly bought contracts only to sell them at a higher price.

Prosecutors said Sarao used off-the-shelf software that he modified to manipulate the trading and his actions earned him more than $ 40 million.

US authorities said Sarao was not solely to be blamed for the crash, but ''his conduct was significantly responsible for the order unbalance, which was one of the conditions'' that led to the crash. They have sought Sarao's extradition from UK. "

China plans to spend $46 billion on infrastructure in Pakistan, dwarfing U.S. program

China plans to spend $46 billion on infrastructure in Pakistan, dwarfing U.S. program: "ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Chinese President Xi Jinping kick-started $28 billion in infrastructure projects in Pakistan, in a visit meant to showcase deepening ties between the two countries.

Mr. Xi arrived Monday on his first state visit to Pakistan, where his government unveiled a massive infrastructure development program known as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Islamabad and Beijing have been close strategic allies for decades, based on their mutual antagonism toward India, but their economic ties had lagged behind.

On Monday, Mr. Xi finalized agreements or broke ground on $28 billion of advance projects out of the total $46 billion, ranging from upgrading Pakistan’s railways to building power plants, said Ahsan Iqbal, Pakistan’s planning minister."

Chinese minister asks India not to be ‘over concerned’ about Pak corridor - The Times of India

Chinese minister asks India not to be ‘over concerned’ about Pak corridor - The Times of India: "BEIJING: Chinese assistant foreign minister Liu Jianchao on Friday asked India not be "over-concerned" about the proposed China-Pakistan economic corridor, which would connect Gwadar sea port with Xinjiang. He insisted it does not pass through any area, which India has territorial claims over.

"The project between China and Pakistan does not concern the relevant dispute between India and Pakistan. I do not think the Indian side should be over concerned about that," Liu told reporters here ahead of president Xi Jinping's two-day visit to Islamabad beginning Monday.

Liu's statement comes even as the corridor passes through Gilgit-Baltistan region, which was part of the erstwhile undivided Jammu & Kashmir before it was separated from POK and eventually given provincial status a few years back.

Liu said the corridor is much larger than mere investments because it involves deepening of China-Pakistan relationship. "

Yuvan on Islam, marriage and Ilayaraja - The Times of India

Yuvan on Islam, marriage and Ilayaraja - The Times of India: "So, are you used to your new name — Abdul Haliq — now?
My friends still call me Yuvan. I have no plans to change 'Yuvan Shankar Raja' in the credit roll of films because many feel it's a brand and cannot be changed. Also, people won't be able to relate to my new name. But when I go to my wife's place, people call me 'Abdul' and I have got used to it now.

How different a person are you now, after you converted to Islam?
Being a celebrity, you sometimes feel proud yourself. When people say 'wow', you will be blown away by it. At least, for a few minutes, you will feel proud of yourself. But after I embraced Islam, that proud feeling no longer arises in me. I feel extremely grounded, for, I realized now that fame is nothing. And when I realized that, I started feeling calm from within.

Microcredit has been a disaster for the poorest in South Africa | Global Development Professionals Network | The Guardian

Microcredit has been a disaster for the poorest in South Africa | Global Development Professionals Network | The Guardian: "After apartheid ended in South Africa in 1994, the international development community quickly arrived with plans to promote the microcredit model. Proclaiming that it would rapidly bring new jobs, incomes, empowerment and dignity to the poorest black communities and townships, expectations of rapid progress ran high.

However, the microcredit medicine applied to post-apartheid South Africa has turned out to be a deadly one. It is now increasingly clear that the much-lauded market-driven microcredit model has inflicted untold damage on the South African economy and society. Concerned investors are rapidly leaving the bloated microcredit sector, with many users arguing that it is on the verge of a self-orchestrated collapse.

The microcredit-induced problems that emerged in South Africa are two-fold. First, microcredit per se is actually an "anti-developmental" intervention. For one thing, it exists on paper to support the smallest income-generating activities, but in practice is increasingly all about supporting consumption spending. In South Africa, the microcredit movement has created an incredibly risky and expensive way to support the immediate consumption needs of the very poorest.

With few poor individuals possessing a secure income stream that might ensure full repayment of a microloan – unemployment is now higher than it was under apartheid – many of the poorest individuals have been forced to repay their microloan by selling off their household assets, borrowing from friends and family, as well as simply taking out new microloans to repay old ones. For far too many now "financially included" individuals in South Africa, using microcredit to support current spending has been a disastrous and irreversible pathway into chronic poverty.

Going further, of the very small percentage of microcredit that actually does go into supporting income-generating microenterprises (as per the original model), the fact remains that the business activities that emerge are simply not the drivers of sustainable development and poverty reduction. The rafts of new street traders, barrow boys, spaza shops and the like have generated very little, if any, positive impact in South Africa's poorest local communities. Centrally, late-apartheid South Africa already possessed a very large informal economy in the black townships, one that was composed of exactly such simple low-capitalised no-growth activities."

Does microfinance really help poor people? | Global Development Professionals Network | The Guardian

Does microfinance really help poor people? | Global Development Professionals Network | The Guardian: "First it was microcredit. Then microfinance. Now financial inclusion. Despite new names, 30 years later there are $100bn (£62bn) in current loans outstanding and the idea of providing financial services to the poor – particularly loans – attracts a cult-like following. Financial inclusion dominates the social investment sector, arguably crowding out other more traditional interventions such as healthcare and education.

I believe that there’s a lack of credible academic evidence proving any poverty-alleviating effects of financial inclusion. “On current evidence, the best estimate of the average impact of microcredit on the poverty of clients is zero”, says mathematician and development economist David Roodman.

Also, in a systematic literature review by the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID), University of East Anglia-based Maren Duvendack concluded the enthusiasm for microfinance had been built upon “foundations of sand”. The microfinance sectors of entire countries have collapsed, a spate of borrower suicides in Andhra Pradesh, India, raised uncomfortable ethical questions, and yet the hype continues. Why?

To clear up some terminology: financial inclusion encompasses a broad range of services, yet in my experience, the focus remains on offering loans (and to a lesser extent remittances), which is where the profit lies. The principal source of revenue for the sector is interest on loans, which is rarely publicised on websites. Rates exceeding 100% per year, even over 200%, are disturbingly common, particularly in Zambia and Mexico. The sector refuses to define what constitutes extortionate rates, or encourage basic requirements for sensible loan use.

Finally, the sector glosses over the fact that much credit is spent on consumption. Over-indebtedness is a chronic problem in some countries, particularly Mexico and Peru , where the problem is not a shortage of credit, but an excess."

Drowning in debt: the growing threat to Cambodia's poor? | Global Development Professionals Network | The Guardian

Drowning in debt: the growing threat to Cambodia's poor? | Global Development Professionals Network | The Guardian: "For years the world has patted itself on the back about the rapid growth of Cambodia’s microfinance market. Over the past decade, Cambodia’s market has been one of the fastest-growing globally, recording a 127% portfolio increase between 2013 and 2014. Forty-five microfinance institutions (MFIs) now serve some 1.8 million borrowers, out of a total population of over 15 million. In a country where the level of formal financial inclusion is negligible, this has looked like a notable success story.

However, as researchers have delved deeper, they have come across figures that cause concern. A study by the Institute of Development in 2013 identified Cambodian clients who have as many as six separate loans, while 51% of clients reported having made a sacrifice (such as eating less or poorer quality food) on at least one occasion in order to make a loan repayment. Competition for clients is intense, and borrowing from multiple sources is commonplace.

After the microfinance crises in India, Bosnia and Nicaragua, practitioners, regulators and investors are on the alert for an overheated microfinance market. But are reckless lenders pushing debt on to poor people who lack the knowledge they need to grasp the real risks?

If that is the case, it makes sense to heed calls for regulatory caps on the number of loans that each client might take out. After all, if multiple borrowing is leading to over-indebtedness – and borrowers are struggling with repayments – lenders are likely to employ harsh collection tactics to cover their liabilities (leaving their clients to default on someone else’s loan). This will be Asia's next trillion dollar economy - Yahoo Finance: "Indonesia is on track to become Asia's next trillion dollar economy in two years, according to IHS, joining the ranks of China, Japan, India, Australia and South Korea.

"The Indonesian economy has the capacity for robust long-term economic growth of around 5.4 percent per year over the 2016 to 2020 time horizon," said Rajiv Biswas, chief economist, Asia-Pacific at IHS.

This will take Southeast Asia's largest economy from its current gross domestic product (GDP) of $870 billion to $1.14 trillion by 2017.

Thereafter, GDP is projected to double again by 2023 to an estimated $2.1 trillion - surpassing Australia, which is currently a $1.52 trillion economy."

These Shi’a militias are just as barbaric as ISIS."

Some militias take pride in their atrocities and appear to often be calling the shots on the battlefield, not the government forces, BloombergView columnist Eli Lake found when he recently visited the front lines north of Baghdad.

Officials said that the State Department's human rights observers and military intelligence had viewed examples of Iraqi Security Forces posting atrocities on personal social media for over a year. But one knowledgeable U.S. official said that since ABC News began asking about the many disturbing images last fall, the atrocities allegations against Iraq’s fighting forces have grown “more severe” and the “very concerning” allegations are being raised at high levels in Baghdad."

Washington’s Immense Incoherence: Close Air Support For Iran’s Clients At Tikrit, Death From The Sky In Aden | David Stockman's Contra Corner

Washington’s Immense Incoherence: Close Air Support For Iran’s Clients At Tikrit, Death From The Sky In Aden | David Stockman's Contra Corner: "Iran should send America a fruit basket to thank it for setting the stage so perfectly for its ascent. As a start, in 2003 the United States eliminated Iran’s major border threats: Iraq’s Saddam Hussein to the west and the Taliban in Afghanistan to the east. (The Taliban are back of course, but diligently focused on America’s puppet Afghan government.) The long slog of Washington’s wars in both those countries dulled even the reliably bloodthirsty American public’s taste for yet more of the same, and cooled off Bush-era plans in Tel Aviv and Washington for air strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities. (After all, if even Vice President Dick Cheney couldn’t pull the trigger on Iran before leaving office in 2008, who in 2015 America is going to do so?)

Better yet for the Iranians, when Saddam was hanged in 2006, they not only lost an enemy who had invaded their country in 1980, launching a bitter war against them that didn’t end for eight years, but gained an ally in the new Iraq. As U.S. influence witheredaway with the failure of the March 2010 Iraqi elections to produce a broadly representative government, Iran stepped in to broker a thoroughly partisan settlement leading to a sectarian Shia government in Baghdad bent on ensuring that the country’s minority Sunni population would remain out of power forever. The Obama administration seemed nearly oblivious to Iran’s gains in Iraq in 2010 — and seems so again in 2015.

Iran in Iraq

In Tikrit, Iranian-led Shia forces recently drove the Islamic State from the city. In charge was Qassem Suleimani, the leader of the Qods Force (a unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards), who had previously led the brutally effective efforts of Iranian special forces against U.S. soldiers in Iraq War 2.0. He returned to that country and assembled his own coalition of Shia militias to take Tikrit. All of them have long benefited from Iranian support, as has the increasingly Shia-dominated Iraqi army.

In addition, the Iranians seem to have brought in their own tanks and possibly even ground troops for the assault on the city. They also moved advanced rocket systems into Iraq, the same weapons Hamas has used against Israel in recent conflicts."

The $9 Trillion Short That’s Goosing The Dollar | David Stockman's Contra Corner

The $9 Trillion Short That’s Goosing The Dollar | David Stockman's Contra Corner: "Sovereign and corporate borrowers outside America owe a record $9 trillion in the U.S. currency, much of which will need repaying in coming years, data from the Bank for International Settlements show.

In addition, central banks that had reduced their holdings of the greenback are starting to reverse course, creating more demand. The dollar’s share of global foreign reserves shrank to a record 60 percent in 2011 from 73 percent a decade earlier, though it’s since climbed back to 63 percent.

So, the short-term ebbs and flows caused by changes in Federal Reserve policy or economic data releases may be overwhelmed by these larger forces combining to fuel more appreciation, according to Jen, the London-based co-founder of SLJ Macro Partners LLP and the former head of currency research at Morgan Stanley.

Dollar ‘Power’

“Short-covering will continue to power the dollar higher,” said Jen, who predicts a 9 percent advance in the next three months to 96 cents per euro. "

Black Power in Washington and the Iran Nuclear Deal

Black Power in Washington and the Iran Nuclear Deal: "Jim Clyburn was livid. In February, shortly after learning that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would deliver a speech to Congress criticizing President Barack Obama’s nuclear diplomacy with Iran, the House’s assistant minority leader joined a small group of senior Democrats for a closed-door meeting in the Capitol building with Yuli Edelstein, the speaker of Israel’s parliament. The boyish-looking Edelstein, a member of the ruling Likud party, had flown from Jerusalem to tamp down the furor that erupted over Netanyahu’s planned address.

Usually, meetings between American lawmakers and Israeli officials on Capitol Hill are chummy. But this one was tense. The Democrats felt it was outrageous for a foreign leader to use Congress as a soapbox to challenge their president, and they were particularly incensed by the way Netanyahu and Republican leaders had arranged the speech behind Obama's back. But Clyburn, a long-standing member of the Congressional Black Caucus, went even further, adding an unmistakable racial overtone to Netanyahu's offense. According to aides, the South Carolina Democrat bluntly told Edelstein he regarded the prime minister's upcoming speech as an "affront to America's first black president.”

Since that meeting, the rancor between black Democrats and Netanyahu has intensified. Some 57 Democrats—including most black lawmakers in D.C.—stayed away from the Israeli leader's March 3 speech in protest. Two weeks later came Israel's parliamentary elections, when Netanyahu renounced his support for a staple of U.S. Middle East policy: a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. After his reelection to a fourth term, Netanyahu tried to walk back his remark, but Obama said he took Netanyahu “at his word” and would now reevaluate his approach to the Middle East peace process. The U.S.-Israel relationship suffered yet another body blow on March 24 after a Wall Street Journal report quoted unnamed American officials saying that Israel had spied on the Iran negotiations, then leaked cherry-picked details to Congress in a bid to scuttle the talks."

In the U.S., diversity is the new majority - LA Times

In the U.S., diversity is the new majority - LA Times: "ensus Bureau report shows that by 2044, whites will no longer comprise a racial majority in the United States. By then, the nation — like today's Los Angeles — will be made up of a kaleidoscope of racial groups, including Latinos, blacks, Asians, Native Americans and multiracial Americans.

This “no racial majority” scenario, even three decades away, provokes fear in some white Americans: fear of change, of losing privileged status or of unwanted people coming into their communities. But it is a change that should be welcomed.

50 years after Watts, African Americans still feel caught between violent crime and the police
The fact is that “no majority” America is here and thriving in 2015. According to the new projections, it is here among children younger than 5, and it is here among all students in the nation's public schools. It will be here for the nation's under-30 population in less than a decade, deepening the transformation that has already come to pockets of many urban cores and large swaths of the nation's coasts and the Southwest.

Interracial marriages are at an all-time high, especially among the young and especially in the most diverse sections of the country. And in just 16 years, there will be minority white populations in 12 states, including California (Los Angeles crossed this threshold in 1990), Texas, Florida, New York, Georgia and New Jersey"

Chinese flock to USA to give birth to U.S. citizens: "BEIJING — Business is booming here for companies that coach pregnant women on how to deceive U.S. immigration authorities so they can enter the United States for the sole purpose of giving birth to American citizens.

At least 500 companies offered "birth tourism" services in China last year, the Shanghai newspaper National Business Daily reported. While there are no official statistics, the number of Chinese citizens heading to the USA to give birth likely is in the tens of thousands each year. The cost of a trip, including medical expenses, runs from $20,000 to $80,000.

The business is legal in China, but the tactics for entering the USA are not. The women are coached to lie about the purpose of their visit by listing "tourism," which makes it easier to get a visa. They also are told to hide their pregnancies when going through U.S. immigration and avoid declarations that they're traveling for medical treatment.

In early March, California authorities raided dozens of maternity hotels for Chinese women in Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties for alleged immigration and tax fraud.

The raids did not prompt crackdowns on the business in China. Six birth tourism companies, including ABC Baby and Precious Beauty Baby, told USA TODAY that business continues as normal. Six others declined comment.

There are legitimate reasons for Chinese citizens to travel to the United States to give birth, such as if one parent is American or a high-risk pregnancy requires medical care from a specialist.

The State department says there is no law barring foreigners from traveling to the U.S. for the purpose of giving birth. The tourism visa they usually travel on, known as a B-2 visa, allows foreigners to enter the U.S. for "medical treatment."

As long as applicants are truthful about their intentions, prove they can afford their medical care, explain why they can't have the procedure done in their home country and assert that they will abide by the time restrictions of their visa, such travel is generally allowed under U.S. law, according to the department."

Why Waitresses Look Sexy | Psychology Today

Why Waitresses Look Sexy | Psychology Today: "Of course, young attractive women do not need to give gifts to anyone!

Male generosity is also an index of the man's social status. If a man gives the waitress a large tip, he is also advertising his own social status in terms of disposable income. It just happens that women weigh a man's earning capacity more highly as a mate selection criterion than men do.

When a man is served by an attractive waitress, he is rather unlikely to strike up a romantic relationship with her. Even so, her income will improve by dressing sexily. As the English researchers (link is external) said, “Good deeds among men increase when presented with the opportunity to copulate.”"
