Yes sitting at work is bad, but is standing actually better? - Health & wellness - The Boston Globe

Yes sitting at work is bad, but is standing actually better? - Health & wellness - The Boston Globe: "Hedge said changing positions regularly is a good idea for all office workers.

What’s best for your muscle and joints and your mind’s productivity? Sit for no more than 20 minutes at a time, Hedge recommended, and stand in one position for no more than 8 minutes. You should also take a two-minute moving break at least twice an hour to stretch or walk around."

Yes sitting at work is bad, but is standing actually better? - Health & wellness - The Boston Globe

Yes sitting at work is bad, but is standing actually better? - Health & wellness - The Boston Globe: "“Standing all day isn’t the answer,” said Alan Hedge, a design and ergonomics professor at Cornell University. “That’s where we were 100 years ago, and we needed to develop chairs to prevent curvature of the spine, backaches, and varicose veins.”

While standing still burns a few more calories as our hearts work harder to circulate blood upward, it also puts more strain on our veins, backs, and joints, especially if we’re overweight.

“Studies haven’t yet determined how much standing helps healthwise,” said Dr. I-Min Lee, an associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital who has studied the risks of sedentary behavior. In population studies, researchers haven’t been able to determine whether the health benefits of reduced sitting time stem from moving around more or from standing still. And results on whether exercise reduces the health risks of sitting are conflicting.

A May study of nearly 17,000 Canadian adults found that those who reported the most time standing had a 33 percent lower risk of dying from any cause over 12 years compared to those who stood the least. But those who exercised at least two hours each week — even if they sat the rest of the time — enjoyed the same life-extending benefits as those who stood the most. The Harvard researchers, on the other hand, found in their study that regular exercise didn’t erase the increased death risk associated with prolonged sitting."

Indian-American student sentenced to life for killing friend - The Times of India: "WASHINGTON: A 25-year-old Indian-American engineering student has been sentenced to life in prison by a US court for fatally stabbing his friend after allegedly finding him cheating with his girlfriend.

Rahul Gupta, a George Washington University graduate student, changed his narrative several times in court, but he did acknowledge that he killed his friend Mark Waugh, 24.

On October 13, 2013, Gupta, his girlfriend and Waugh went to the Indian-American's high-rise apartment in Silver Spring, a suburb of Washington, DC, where he caught Waugh cheating with his girlfriend. Waugh died after being stabbed and slashed 11 times inside the apartment."

We are in the middle of a currency war: Analyst - Yahoo Finance: "There is a currency war going on-one in which the Federal Reserve is the least able to play, said David Woo, head of global interest rates and currencies research at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, on Friday.

The European Central Bank statement during a dinner last week regarding the purchase of more bonds is a strong signal it doesn't want the euro to go back over $1.15, said Woo during an interview with CNBC's " Squawk on the Street ."

"You could argue that the U.S. got back on the street playing that game," explained Woo. "Now, the U.S. cannot tell others they cannot play this game."

With inflation picking up and better performance from U.S. companies, the Fed has less of a reason to get engaged in this war at the moment, said Woo."

‘China now home to 1m super rich’ - The Times of India

‘China now home to 1m super rich’ - The Times of India: "BEIJING: The number of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) in China passed the one million mark for the first time last year following a surge in the "innovative industries" sector, a study has shown. Defined as having more than 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) of investable assets, the country's super rich totalled 1.04 million at the end of last year, or twice the number recorded in 2010, the China Private Wealth Report said.

The annual study is compiled by consulting firm Bain & Co and China Merchants Bank, state-run Shanghai Daily reported. China's investable assets rose by 16% annually between 2012 and 2014 to 112 trillion yuan last year, the report said, adding that the figure is set to grow to 129 trillion yuan this year.

Many of the "new rich" came from innovative industries such as IT, biotechnology and alternative energy, the report said. About 80% of them are aged under 50. "China's HNWIs are driving the growth of the country's real economy, particularly in key innovative sectors, which is helping to fuel the economy and advance innovation," said Alfred Shang, a partner at Bain.

Guangdong province has the most wealthy individuals, with more than 100,000, though Shanghai and Beijing, and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong and Sichuan each have more than 50,000, the report said.

Meanwhile, according to the 2015 Billionaire Report released on Wednesday by UBS and PricewaterhouseCoopers, Asia will overtake US as the world's cradle for wealth generation in the next 5to 10 years. In China in the first three months of this year, a new billionaire was created almost every week, the report said. "

More heatwaves in offing due to global temperature rise: CSE - The Times of India

More heatwaves in offing due to global temperature rise: CSE - The Times of India: "Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) also noted that about 2,000 people have been killed in India by this weather condition with the worst-affected states being Andhra Pradesh and Telangana where maximum temperatures have hovered around a searing 45 degrees Celsius.

It said climate records show that human-induced global warming had turned 2014 into the hottest year on record while eight out of the ten warmest years in India were during the recent past decade (2001-2010), making it the warmest decade on record with a decadal mean temperature anomaly of 0.49 °C.

"More heat waves were expected as globally temperatures have risen by an average .8 degrees in the past 100 years. Night-time temperatures are rising too, with Ahmedabad and Delhi recently reporting 39 and 36 degrees centigrade. The number of heat wave days may go up from about 5 to between 30 and 40 every year," a CSE statement said.

The Delhi-based green advocacy and research body said there is also enough evidence of extreme weather events being on the "rise". It noted that although compared to 2010, heat wave conditions in 2015 so far have been of a shorter duration, yet with a higher death toll."

Hospitals overwhelmed as heatwave deaths near 1,500 - The Times of India

Hospitals overwhelmed as heatwave deaths near 1,500 - The Times of India: "NEW DELHI: Hospitals were struggling on Thursday to cope with an influx of victims of a blistering heatwave that has claimed nearly 1,500 lives in just over a week.

Hundreds of people, mainly from the poorest sections of society, die at the height of summer every year in India, but this year's figures are unusually high.

In Andhra Pradesh - by far the worst-hit state - 1,020 people have died since May 18, more than double the number of heat-related deaths for the whole of last year.

In neighbouring Telangana, where temperatures hit 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit) over the weekend, 340 people have died from the heat recently compared to 31 in the whole of last year."

Aussie hit for defending Hijabi women | Arab News

Aussie hit for defending Hijabi women | Arab News: "MELBOURNE: An Australian man was attacked as he defended three Muslim women after they were verbally abused in a train in Melbourne.
Police are investigating the incident that started when two men verbally abused the group of women with heads covered, Al Arabiya website reported.
Australia’s The Age newspaper claims one of the men criticized the women for their headscarves when they sat next to them saying: “You shouldn’t be wearing that (expletive) in Australia.”
Jason Cias, 36, said he was hit in the face after an argument broke out and one of the older women spoke in Arabic in a bid to diffuse the situation. The men then said: “You shouldn’t be speaking that (expletive) in Australia.”
As the women got off the train, one of the men hurled a sexual threat to which Cias reacted. Cias said in comments carried by The Independent: “I said to the guy, ‘Mate, they’re women’. The implication there was you don’t threaten people, particularly women.”
Cias was then punched in the face by one of the men. The incident was videoed by onlookers. All picture and video evidence has been handed to the police.
The incident left Cias with a black eye however he told news.com.au that he wished he had intervened even earlier."

PHP vs. Node.js: An epic battle for developer mind share | InfoWorld

For Node.js talent, it's a seller's market | InfoWorld

For Node.js talent, it's a seller's market | InfoWorld: "According to statistics from job search site Indeed.com, job notices involving Node.js has jumped from zero to 4,000 active listings since 2011. Salaries for Node.js development jobs start somewhere in the $60,000 range and can reach as high as $140,000. The exact job descriptions vary, though; some are highly Node.js-focused (Senior Node Developer), while others list Node.js as part of a mix of requirements for a more general full-stack developer position.

Even if the Node.js job pool is still tiny compared to positions involving other, better-established Web languages and frameworks, its relative rate of growth within the same time period is striking. Python, for instance, enjoys a greater pool of jobs (around 31,000 at last count), but those numbers crested in 2013. Ruby (18,750 listings) has followed much the same pattern; in fact, Ruby and Python movements track each other closely enough to hint at the two being commonly deployed together. Java listings have been trending steadily downward since 2010."

Good Hair Oil for Dandruff | LIVESTRONG.COM

Good Hair Oil for Dandruff | LIVESTRONG.COM: "Infuse your scalp with good health while relying on natural treatments to clear up dandruff. Using oil to treat dandruff -- which is often accompanied by increased oil production of the scalp -- may seem counterintuitive, but the right kind of oil can go a long way in keeping pesky flakes at bay. Treat an itchy, flaky scalp with a few selected varieties to halt the overproduction of scalp oil and soothe irritation.

Coconut Oil
The fatty acids in coconut oil have antiviral and antibacterial properties that cleanse and treat the scalp, while infusing it with nourishing moisture. Apply 1 to 2 tablespoons to your scalp, massaging it into your whole head and concentrating on problem spots. Let the oil soak into your scalp for at least 15 minutes before shampooing.

Essential Oils
With its antiseptic power, tea-tree oil kills bacteria and yeast that can accumulate on your scalp and cause dandruff. Massage five to 10 drops of the oil into your scalp and let it sit for a minute or two before shampooing. Alternatively, add 10 to 20 drops of it to your favorite shampoo and use it daily to treat your scalp. Other essential oils that are reputed to treat dandruff include patchouli, rosemary, sage, ylang-ylang, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus and juniper."

16-year-old girl beaten and burned alive by lynch mob in Rio Bravo, Guatemala - Americas - World - The Independent

16-year-old girl beaten and burned alive by lynch mob in Rio Bravo, Guatemala - Americas - World - The Independent: "A 16 year old girl has been beaten and burned to death in Guatemala by a lynch mob, after she was accused of killing a taxi driver.

A horrifying video of the attack has been circulated widely in Guatemala, and shows images of the girl being punched and kicked by a large group of vigilantes.

After the beating, one of the mob covers the young girl in petrol and sets her on fire. After writhing in pain, the girl finally dies.

The incident took place in a village in the Rio Bravo municipality of Guatemala, in Central America.

According to Guatemalan news site Tiempo, the girl was accused of being part of a group that killed motorcycle taxi driver Carlos Enrique González Noriega, 68.

— Cristian Icó Soto (@sotocristian23) May 13, 2015
The group reportedly fled after attacking Noriega, but the girl was caught, and immediately set upon by the vigilantes.

What is most shocking about the video is the make-up of the crowd - as well as the men who beat and attack her, the video shows young children and elderly women looking on as the girl is murdered.

Police arrived to control the scene afterwards, and have not identified the murdered girl.

The video, which is far too graphic to publish here, has been shared widely in Guatemala and has provoked an outcry on social media - one Guatemalan Twitter user called the video "depressing".

Violent lynchings, which often involve the victims being burned alive, are a fact of life in Guatemala - in March, two men were lynched in the village of Saquiyá, around 100 miles away from Rio Bravo, after they were accused of stealing a car.

The mob of around 150 people burned one of the men alive, and hung the other from a tree."

‘Naked’ marriage vows
Ten couples covered in body paint wearing only their underwear have celebrated their “naked weddings” at Hangzhou Paradise amusement park in Zhejiang province, news website China.org.cn reports. The couples, some of whom have been married for many years, said they were rejecting modern Chinese values, which place greater value on money than love. In China, a naked wedding involves a couple marrying without owning a house or car.

‘Feet in the drinking fountain? What’s the problem?’: row over Chinese woman's clean-up at subway station

http://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/1788121/feet-drinking-fountain-whats-problem-row-over-chinese-womans

A woman was unrepentant after she was caught in central China cleaning her feet in a drinking fountain at a subway station, a newspaper reported.
The article is the latest in long-running series of reports in the press and social media in China focusing on the rude or “uncivilised” behaviour of some sections of the public.
The woman was caught washing her feet in the drinking fountain in Wuhan in Hubei province, the Wuhan Evening News reported.
Other passengers tried to persuade her to stop, but she refused saying the water was undrinkable anyway because it had high levels of bacteria in it.
She then wiped her foot with a tissue, threw it on the ground and got on to a train with her child, the report said.
State-run media have railed against the rude behaviour of some citizens in recent years and have appealed for greater courtesy and respect for others.
The subway station incident echoes a report about a young couple in Wuhan who were spotted in March taking a shower in a public fountain.

They left after a group of security guards were summoned to the scene.

The rise of China’s sugar daddies and a ‘broker for gold diggers’ | South China Morning Post

The rise of China’s sugar daddies and a ‘broker for gold diggers’ | South China Morning Post: "A large number of affluent men in China want to be “sugar daddies”, keeping younger women as mistresses or girlfriends, according to a matchmaking website.

SeekingArrangement.com, a site that specialises in hooking up wealthier men and women with younger partners, said about 100,000 men on the mainland had joined its service in recent months.

The US-based website launched its Chinese version in September last year and said membership had increased rapidly. About a quarter of the men are married.

Media in China have dubbed the site a “broker for gold diggers” and it has created controversy on the mainland since its launch.

Some media suggested it would encourage young women to follow the example of the internet celebrity Guo Meimei, a 23-year-old who enjoyed publicly flaunting her luxury lifestyle which was later revealed to have been funded by a married businessman from Shenzhen.

The Chinese matchmaking service says on its website its members are “successful”, “charming”, financially stable men with a mature character who will “share life experiences with you and take you shopping, for expensive dinners and overseas sightseeing”.

Beijing has the largest number of would-be “sugar daddies” on the mainland with about 10,000 site members, according to SeekingArrangement.com.

They each have an average of about 12 million yuan (HK$15 million) in assets, based on the figures they supplied when registering.

Shanghai follows with nearly 8,000 members, with claimed average assets of 15 million yuan.

Most members on the mainland are in their early 30s and give their partners between 10,000 yuan and 20,000 yuan a month, according to the website.

There are two women for every man using the Chinese site, as women can join free.

Website founder Brandon Wade said the platform aimed to help poorer women, mostly college students, ease their financial burdens.

It also helped businessmen find the right date and emphasised that sex was not a necessary condition for any relationships, he said.

“The average age of sugar daddies has been decreasing each year, suggesting that professionals today have no time for traditional dating and so they want to find high-quality dates quickly via an effective method,” he said.

Professor Yu Hai, who studies sociology at Fudan University in Shanghai, was critical of the site.

“I don’t see much difference between this so-called sugar dating and sexual transactions,” he said.

“If someone is looking for a serious relationship that can last, there are plenty of other ways.

“If one is well off and kind enough to think of aiding a poverty-stricken student, he could also donate through various channels.”

The increased wealth of some Chinese has led to a loss of moral self-discipline, according to Yu.

“Just look at officials today. Even those clear of corruption keep mistresses,” he said."

Why Malaysian Muslim singer Shila Amzah had to move to China | South China Morning Post

Why Malaysian Muslim singer Shila Amzah had to move to China | South China Morning Post: "Shila says relocating to China was the right decision for her. She has received more respect and encouragement from mainland audiences. But with that, she also feels the pressure.

"I have to work harder than I did in Malaysia - pushing myself to become a better person, a better singer, a better performer. This brings out the best in me," she says.

Shila has also become a cultural ambassador. She sang for President Xi Jinping in October 2013, when he visited Malaysia. In December 2014, the Chinese government gave Shila an award for her "special contribution to building friendship between China and Malaysia".

As a Muslim, she is aware that her religious beliefs and practices may be a sensitive issue in some parts of China. For example, in one city in Xinjiang, citizens with head scarves, veils and long beards are banned from public buses. Some view this as discrimination against Uygurs; the authorities think the ban strengthens security especially when major events are being held in cities.

Shila has a different view. "There are a lot of things in our religion that are really simple. It's not the religion that makes it hard, but it is the people who make it hard.

"Religion is about trust, about believing in yourself. Whatever your religion, it's really beautiful to have something to believe in. All religions teach us to be nice, to be kind and to have courage. Those are the values I want my fans to have.""

Something is grotesquely wrong with Vancouver’s housing market, and the time for denialism is over | South China Morning Post

Something is grotesquely wrong with Vancouver’s housing market, and the time for denialism is over | South China Morning Post: "If Vancouver (price/income ratio 10.6) could achieve the affordability of New York (6.1), or Singapore (5.0) I’m betting that Eveline Xia would be dancing down Main Street.

Surely Vancouver has always been unaffordable? A quick check of the stats will show that as recently at 10 years ago, Vancouver’s price/income ratio was in dancing territory, at 5.3.

As for the perennial low-rates argument, pretty much everywhere has low rates. It tells us nothing about what makes Vancouver’s market special.

An exceptional cause must be found for an exceptional situation, and for Vancouver, that can be found quite easily in wealth migration, which exploded in the past decade.

Vancouverites still struggle to grasp the scale of this influx to their modestly-sized city. From 2005-2012, about 45,000 millionaire migrants arrived in Vancouver under just two wealth-determined schemes, the now-defunct Immigrant Investor Programme and the still-running Quebec Immigrant Investor Programme. Let’s put that in perspective. The entire United States only accepted 9,450 wealth migration applications in the same period under its famous EB-5 scheme, likely representing fewer than 30,000 individuals.

So, Vancouver has recently received more wealth-determined migration than any other city in the world, by a long stretch. This, in a city with some of the lowest incomes in Canada.

The flipside to these various misunderstandings is the current focus on Australian-style restrictions on foreign ownership (Canada doesn’t even bother to track foreign ownership, let alone restrict it). Such restrictions might be an admirable goal, but I very much doubt they would have much impact on Vancouver."

I'm a brown person and I live in a racist country

I'm a brown person and I live in a racist country: "THE FIRST TIME I EXPERIENCED RACISM WAS IN A CLASSROOM WHEN I WAS NINE YEARS OLD. I didn’t know what was happening, but I understood that there was a lot of hate there while my teacher loomed over me and said, “You know why I didn’t call on you to answer my questions? Because your skin is black.”

She spat the word black like it gave her boils.

I’m from Singapore. One of the richest nations in the world, touted as a cultural and religious melting pot with racially harmonious Rainbow Brites running around throwing glitter in the air. I’m calling bullshit. I have never felt like I belonged in this country a single day of my life.

Products that are supposed to whiten your vaginas may be new to the beauty market in Asia, but the correlation between dark skin and “dirtiness” is not anything new. You don’t even have to look further than the makeup counters and drugstores — no colors exist after a certain shade of beige.

I should explain the racial make-up of Singapore:

It is a country of 5 million people, with Chinese making up 74% of the population, Malays – 13%, Indians – 9% and the rest are Eurasians and other minority ethnicities. Right from the time you are born, your ID tells you what race you are. Nobody identifies themselves as Singaporean first; your racial identity is what you are first and foremost."

Foreclosure to Home Free, as 5-Year Clock Expires - NYTimes.com

Foreclosure to Home Free, as 5-Year Clock Expires - NYTimes.com: "MIAMI — In September, Susan Rodolfi celebrated an unusual anniversary: five years of missed mortgage payments.

She is like a ghost of the housing market’s painful past, one of thousands of Americans who have skipped years of mortgage payments and are still living in their homes.

Now a legal quirk could bring a surreal ending to her foreclosure case and many others around the country: They may get to keep their homes without ever having to pay another dime.

The reason, lawyers for homeowners argue, is that the cases have dragged on too long.

There are tens of thousands of homeowners who have missed more than five years of mortgage payments, many of them clustered in states like Florida, New Jersey and New York, where lenders must get judges to sign off on foreclosures."

PIPES: Muslim Russia? - Washington Times

PIPES: Muslim Russia? - Washington Times: "Not only do ethnic Muslims account for 21 million to 23 million of Russia’s total population of 144 million, or 15 percent, but their proportion is fast-growing. Alcoholism-plagued ethnic Russians are said to have European birthrates and African death rates. Their women have on average 1.4 children, and their men have a life expectancy of 60 years. In Moscow, ethnic Christian women have 1.1 child.

In contrast, Muslim women bear 2.3 children on average and have fewer abortions than their Russian counterparts. ... In addition ... some ethnic Russians are converting to Islam.

These trends point to Christians declining in numbers by 0.6 percent a year and Muslims increasing by that same amount, which will have dramatic effects over time. Some analysts foresee Muslims becoming a majority in the 21st century — a demographic revolution that would fundamentally change the country’s character. Paul Goble, an expert on Russian minorities, concludes that “Russia is going through a religious transformation that will be of even greater consequence for the international community than the collapse of the Soviet Union.” A Russian commentator he quotes envisions a mosque on Red Square in Moscow. The facile assumption that Moscow is and will remain Western-oriented “is no longer valid,” he argues. In particular, he predicts that the Muslim demographic surge “will have a profound impact on Russian foreign policy.”

Within a few years, Muslims will make up half the conscripts in the Russian army."

Burma's Buddhist mobs sow fear amid widening unrest | World news | The Guardian

Burma's Buddhist mobs sow fear amid widening unrest | World news | The Guardian: "Hundreds of people died in Rakhine state last year when clashes between Buddhists and Muslims drove about 140,000 residents, mostly Muslims, from their homes. Most are still living in refugee camps.

This month, authorities in two areas of Rakhine announced a regulation limiting Muslim families to two children. The policy drew sharp criticism from Muslim leaders, rights groups and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

On Tuesday a US state department spokesman, Patrick Ventrell, said the US opposed coercive policies limiting births, and called on Burma "to eliminate all such policies without delay".

The clashes had seemed confined to the Rakhine region, but in late March, similar Buddhist-led violence swept the town of Meikthila in central Burma, killing at least 43 people. Earlier this month, a court sentenced seven Muslims from Meikthila to prison terms for their role in the violence.

Several other towns in central Burma experienced less deadly violence, mostly involving the torching of Muslim businesses and mosques.

Muslims account for about 4% of Burma's roughly 60 million people. Anti-Muslim sentiment is closely tied to nationalism and the dominant Buddhist religion, so leaders have been reluctant to speak up."

Buddhist monk uses racism and rumours to spread hatred in Burma | World news | The Guardian

Buddhist monk uses racism and rumours to spread hatred in Burma | World news | The Guardian: "Despite spending seven years in prison for stoking religious violence, Wirathu won a "freedom of religion" award in February from the UK's foremost Burmese monastery, Sasana Ramsi in London, in the same week that he spread rumours that a Rangoon school would be developed into a mosque.

Analysts warn that Wirathu's seeming freedom to preach as he pleases – in addition to his influence over other monks, who have also started preaching against Islam – should be taken as a wake-up call to the rest of the world. "If a similar hate movement like Burma's '969' movement – which spreads hate speech and hate symbols – [existed] specifically against, say, the Jews in Europe, no European government would tolerate it," Burmese activist and London School of Economics visiting fellow Maung Zarni said.

"Why should the EU not take it seriously, in a major EU-aid recipient country?"

Both Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi have been criticised for not taking a greater stand against the violence that has racked Burma in recent months. Some have pointed to the seemingly planned nature of many of the attacks; UN special envoy Vijay Nambiar said the violence had a "brutal efficiency" and cited "incendiary propaganda" as stirring up trouble."

Woman Sues Debt Collector, Wins $83 Million - Yahoo Finance

Woman Sues Debt Collector, Wins $83 Million - Yahoo Finance: "A Missouri jury ordered a debt buyer to pay nearly $83 million to a Kansas City woman it pursued for a $1,000 credit card bill she didn't owe, NPR affiliate KCUR reports. The jury found Portfolio Recovery Associates LLC guilty of violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, for which it will pay $250,000 in damages, as well as maliciously prosecuting the woman, Maria Guadalupe Mejia, over the debt that did not belong to her. For the malicious prosecution, the jury awarded Mejia $82,990,000 in punitive damages.

PRA Group Inc., which owns Portfolio Recovery Associates, sent an email statement to Credit.com:

"This outlandish verdict defies all common sense," wrote spokesman Michael McKeon. "We hope and expect the judge will set aside this inappropriate award, and we plan to file motions to make that request formally in the near term. Any fair reading of the facts of this case makes plain that a verdict of this size is not justice by any means, and cannot stand."

Portfolio Recovery, one of the nation's largest debt buyers, sued Mejia in February 2013 over the credit card debt, though the actual debtor turned out to be a man in Kansas City, Kansas, with a name similar to Mejia's. The company pursued Mejia for the debt for 15 months after she first received notice of the lawsuit. In a written statement to KCUR, Mejia said, "The lawsuit terrified me."

Fear is a common consumer response to debt collectors, whether the debt is legitimate or not. The first thing consumers should do when they hear from a debt collector is ask the collector to validate the debt in writing — it's crucial to know your debt collection rights as a consumer, so you don't end up paying a debt you don't owe or letting the collection account unnecessarily damage your credit standing.  (You can see if a collection account is affecting your credit scores for free on Credit.com.)

If you're unsure of how to approach a debt collection situation, you may want to consult a consumer law attorney, who may review your case for free, to help you understand whether the collector is violating your rights. If the debt is old, it could be past your state's statute of limitations for collection. You can also consult this state-by-state guide to debt collection statutes of limitation to see where you stand."

Chinese Home-Buying Binge Transforms California Suburb Arcadia - Businessweek

Chinese Home-Buying Binge Transforms California Suburb Arcadia - Businessweek: "A year ago the property would have gone for $1.3 million, but Arcadia is booming. Residents have become used to postcards offering immediate, all-cash deals for their property and watching as 8,000-square-foot homes go up next door to their modest split levels. For buyers from mainland China, Arcadia offers excellent schools, large lots with lenient building codes, and a place to park their money beyond the reach of the Chinese government.

The city, population 57,600, projects that about 150 older homes—53 percent more than normal—will be torn down this year and replaced with mansions. The deals happen fast and are rarely listed publicly. Often, the first indication that a megahouse is coming next door is when the lawn turns brown. That means the neighbor has stopped watering and green construction netting is about to go up."

The wall — Greater Fool – Authored by Garth Turner – The Troubled Future of Real Estate: "The enemy is demographics. When the Boomers were swarming the universities there were seven workers for every wrinklie over 65. In another decade or so there’ll be just two workers contributing to the support of each geriatric hippie.

Worse, we’re living longer. In 1970 women could expect to achieve 76 years, and now it’s 83. Those extra seven years are the most expensive of your life. Over 90% of the health care consumed by a person is administered during the period. And with long life comes an epidemic of dementia, often requiring intensive care. I know. My father died in his eighties, had Alzheimer’s for five years, and required $8,000 a month in 24/7 assistance."

Income gap: CEOs make 373 times average worker pay - Yahoo Finance: "The average S&P 500 company CEO made 373 times the salary of the average production and non-supervisory worker in 2014, up from 331 times in 2013, according to the AFL-CIO.

Why is CEO pay rising sharply, and how are CEO pay packages structured to maximize executive compensation? Here are the basics you need to know to understand the big numbers behind the CEO headlines.

1. How much do CEOs get paid?

The average pay package last year was $22.6 million, up from $20.7 million in 2013, according to an analysis of companies' proxy disclosures by executive-compensation data firm Equilar."

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com: "One aspect that has come under scrutiny is location. Projects are supposed to be in areas of high unemployment, yet are in prosperous neighborhoods like Midtown, Chelsea and TriBeCa. This is because developers are allowed to incorporate contiguous census tracts in their calculations. Pacific Park Brooklyn, for example, is on the border of wealthy brownstone Brooklyn neighborhoods, yet relied on high unemployment figures from areas of Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant to make its case.

Parts of the visa program are up for renewal in September, and Congress is likely to address some concerns; the rapidly snapped-up 10,000-visa allotment may be among them. “It is going to be fixed and they will reshuffle the number of visas to make more available,” said Mona Shah, an immigration lawyer who specializes in the visa program.

There is also a good chance that the $500,000 investment threshold will be raised, an effort that Invest in the USA supports, and the practice of using contiguous census tracts may be curtailed. Ending such gerrymandering could have major ramifications in New York, as there are few areas of Manhattan, for example, that have high enough unemployment rates to qualify.

In the meantime, “the market is still a bit like the Wild West,” said Min Chan, a lawyer and associate real estate broker at City Connections. The brokerage firm is applying for a license to assist developers with the visa program, one of the first brokerage firms to do so. “There are a lot of people out there who don’t know what they are doing. It is very complicated, and there are a lot of I’s to dot and T’s to cross.

“But it also is worthwhile, because it creates jobs and gives people access to the American dream.”"

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com: "“It is a good financing vehicle,” said Asaf Shuster, the vice president for business development of the Victor Group, which is raising $90 million from 180 foreign investors for a 60-story condominium at 281 Fifth Avenue. The project’s total budget is roughly $400 million, and “in order to build such a big project, you need a lot of equity and a big stack of financing,” Mr. Shuster said.

Before the advent of the visa program, the company would have taken out a loan and paid around 12 percent in interest, “but EB-5 money can be as low as 5 percent,” he said. Developers pay the costly immigration agents, as well as legal fees and other expenses, said Mr. Finkelstein, who is advising the Victor Group on 281 Fifth Avenue.

But while the program can make sense for foreigners and developers, several well-documented cases of fraud have occurred, primarily involving developers who misrepresented themselves to investors and then failed to deliver a completed project. And while a traditional commercial bank pays close attention to construction schedules and dispenses funds as the project proceeds, EB-5 investors deliver lump sums, so a developer could spend the money before the project is complete and wind up with a funding shortfall.

So far, New York City has yet to have a major problem with EB-5, but it may be only a matter of time. “It usually takes about five years, and a lot of these projects were started in 2011, so it is too early to know which ones will fail,” said Mr. Chang of Sotheby’s. “But in my mind, I see some red flags and projects that are not in good shape.”

Another criticism of the program is its lack of transparency and oversight. Even the program’s proponents have called for improvements."

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com: "Mr. Lin and Mr. Lai are typical of the investors in this program, said Daniel Chang, the head of the Asia desk for the Nikki Field team at Sotheby’s International Realty. “It is really for middle-class and upper-middle-class Chinese, and many are doing it for their children,” Mr. Chang said. “This program is not for the very rich in China, because the superwealthy do not want to pay U.S. taxes.” Instead, he said, the wealthiest Chinese prefer to have their legal residences in low tax jurisdictions like Hong Kong or Singapore, and then take advantage of 10-year tourist visas to the United States.

For developers, finding middle-class investors who can prove that their $500,000 investment comes from legitimate endeavors, and who will pass muster with immigration officials, can be tricky.

“The hardest part was showing proof of funds,” Mr. Lai said. As a manufacturer, he received money from several different sources, he said, and “proving that it was all legitimate and giving the right kind of records was challenging.”

Identifying investors is a competitive business. Often, developers hire so-called immigration agents in China who use their networks to find investors.

Developers also take the search for investors in their projects on the road, primarily to China. These presentations can be sedate or flashy affairs. “We had one where they started off with a dance program and a light show,” said Gary M. Rosenberg, a partner of the law firm Rosenberg & Estis, which represents the Durst Organization.

Foreign investors put $200 million into Via, a rental building Durst is developing on West 57th Street, and $80 million into Durst’s mixed-use project at 855 Avenue of the Americas; the financing represents about 25 percent of the total cost of the two projects. Mr. Rosenberg said the roadshow for these projects included an M.C., trivia games and prizes. “The first 100 people who signed up to make a $500,000 commitment that day were given iPads,” he said."

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com: "For foreign investors who have the money, the program can be an easy way to gain legal residency in the United States.

In 2009, Yi Lin, 47, was working as a media executive in Shanghai when he began thinking of applying for a green card through the program. He spent two years researching developments, “looking from east to west and north to south,” before he settled on investing $500,000 in a mixed-use project in Miami.

“You have to be very clear about the process and the project and how it is financed,” Mr. Lin said. “Unfortunately, many Chinese are clear about the immigration process, but are not familiar with the project they are investing in.” It is important, he said, because if a project fails, foreigners can lose both their investment and the opportunity to secure a green card.

Mr. Lin’s project in Miami went without a hitch and six months ago, he and his wife, Molly Xi, received green cards. Now, the couple are living in a luxury apartment in Chelsea and Mr. Lin is working as a media consultant. “I stayed in Shanghai for almost 45 years and I want to feel a different life in a different city,” he said. “In terms of worldwide international cities, New York City is the best.”"

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com: "Under the federal program, a foreigner who invests $500,000 — and in some instances, $1 million — in a project that will create at least 10 jobs can apply for a green card. It generally takes from 22 to 26 months to obtain legal residency through the program, as opposed to several years for other visa programs.

While the EB-5 program has been around since 1990, it was only in the wake of the recession, when securing loans from traditional lenders became difficult, that companies began using it in earnest to raise money for projects. Any company is eligible as long as it hires 10 people per foreign investor. So, for example, a fast-food franchise can raise $1 million from two investors if it hires 20 employees.

“Two or three years ago, the government created a structure that made it much easier for us,” said David Finkelstein, the chief operating officer of the American Immigration Group, which advises developers on the visa program. “Now we can use our construction costs and certain soft costs, like architectural costs, to determine how many jobs we will create, and therefore, how much we can raise from investors.”

In the last four years, the program’s popularity has surged. In fiscal year 2010, 1,885 visas were issued. But by fiscal year 2013 that figure jumped 354 percent to 8,564, according to government data. Last year, the entire annual allotment of 10,000 visas had been claimed by August — before the end of the fiscal year in October.

This year the quota was reached even earlier, on May 1. Under the program, the family of the investor, including any dependent under 21, can apply for a green card, and each family member is counted toward the quota. As most investors apply as a couple or a family, the supply is used up quickly.

Numbers are hard to come by, but in fiscal year 2013, the most recent year available, investment through the visa program totaled $379 million in New York State, according to data from Invest in the USA, an industry trade organization for the EB-5 program. That is 19 percent of the total investment in the program, second only to California, which makes up 22 percent. This is a major increase from previous years. Investment in New York State for fiscal years 2010 and 2011 combined only came to $327 million. These numbers are low because the data lags, and do not include some of the more recent large-scale projects, like Hudson Yards."

Want a Green Card? Invest in Real Estate - NYTimes.com: "Like many of her fellow classmates at New York University, Yanchu Zhao has a busy schedule. A college junior, she has a double major in economics and journalism, and juggles classes, an internship and life with roommates in a rental near Herald Square.

But unlike many of her fellow classmates, Ms. Zhao came to the United States on a student visa. “A lot of students talked about how hard it was to get a job in New York and in the United States,” she said. “My parents heard that if I can get a green card, it would be easier for me to succeed.”

So two years ago, Ms. Zhao’s parents invested $500,000 in a hotel project on Bryant Park, knowing that their investment could be parlayed into green cards for the family. Three months ago, their paperwork came through and the Zhaos became permanent residents of the United States.

While Ms. Zhao’s father has remained in Beijing, her mother joined her in the United States and is now renting a studio on Roosevelt Island and studying English. Investing in real estate projects in exchange for legal immigration status has become big business in New York City. Through a federal visa program known as EB-5, foreigners, more than 80 percent of them from China, are investing billions of dollars in hotels, condominiums, office towers and public/private works in the hope it will result in green cards. Twelve-hundred foreigners have poured $600 million into projects at Hudson Yards; 1,154 have invested $577 million in Pacific Park Brooklyn, the development formerly known as Atlantic Yards; and 500 have put $250 million into the Four Seasons hotel and condominium in the financial district. The list of projects involving EB-5 investments also includes the International Gem Tower on West 47th Street and the New York Wheel on Staten Island."

But analysts warned any recovery in the market will take some time given a huge inventory of unsold homes, and said the property sector remains the biggest risk to the world's second-largest economy, which looks set for its worst year in 25 years."

The Fallacy of the ‘Islamic Bank' | The Institute of Islamic Eschatology

The Fallacy of the ‘Islamic Bank' | The Institute of Islamic Eschatology: "The so-called “Islamic bank’ is a usurious institution contrary to Islam. The ‘Islamic bank” is an absurd attempt to resolve, as was done in the case of Christianity, the unswerving opposition of Islam to usury for fourteen centuries.

Since its origin, the ‘Islamic bank’ has been patronized and promoted by usurers. Their only intention was to incorporate the thousand million Muslims of the world–who in general would scornfully avoid using any banking or usurious institution–into the international financial and monetary system. The artificial creation by the colonial powers of the so called ‘Islamic states’, itself a contradiction in terms, whose character is markedly anti-lslamic, was the historical result of the end of territorial colonization and the beginning of the financial neo-colonialism."

The deceased, Sagar (20), was allegedly having an affair with one of their sister. Police suspect it as a case of honour killing.

Police said Sagar was kidnapped and then taken to Loni where he was crushed by a car. His body was dumped in Sahibabad in an attempt to project it as an accident.

The incident was reported on April 4 when the family members of Sagar, a garment shop owner in Ghaziabad, registered a missing complaint at the GTB Enclave police station. Sagar's body was recovered by the UP police at Sahibabad and disposed it of after 72 hours as no one had come to claim it. However, a probe revealed that he was last seen at the Loni border and seen with two men, later identified as Rahul (28) and Ankur (24) and two juveniles."

Rohingya Refugees From Myanmar Have Been Persecuted for Decades - NYTimes.com

Rohingya Refugees From Myanmar Have Been Persecuted for Decades - NYTimes.com: "The refugees fleeing Myanmar, from the Muslim Rohingya ethnic minority, have been persecuted for decades. They have been evicted from their homes and kicked off their land, and attacked by the military and by Buddhist extremists in Rakhine, the western coastal state where they live. Their voting rights were effectively revoked in February. Their government insists that they are in the country illegally, and most neighboring countries refuse to accept them.

In effect, they are stateless.

President Thein Sein denies that the Rohingya, with a population estimated at 800,000 or more, exist as an ethnic group, and he refers to them as Bengalis, suggesting that they are from Bangladesh and therefore subject to deportation.

Indonesia Turns Away a Migrant Ship as the Region Grapples With an InfluxMAY 12, 2015
Muslims Flee to Malaysia and Indonesia by the HundredsMAY 11, 2015
Many Rohingya came to Myanmar, then known as Burma, in the 19th century, when the country was under British rule. The Rohingya themselves, and some scholars, say they are indigenous to Rakhine State. Muslims have lived in Rakhine, once known as Arakan, for centuries, although it is not clear whether the Rohingya of today descend directly from those Muslims.

The latest wave of migration is part of a huge exodus that began in the fall after the Myanmar government, which had long denied citizenship to the Rohingya, gave them a difficult choice: They could qualify for second-class citizenship by proving that their families had been living in Burma since 1948, the year of independence, or be placed in camps and face deportation. Many lacked the paperwork to prove residency or did not meet the long residency requirement, human rights advocates said.

Although the Myanmar government has not followed through on the plan, it prompted many Rohingya to flee. In October and early November, 14,500 people went to Thailand in hopes of ultimately reaching Malaysia, which has quietly accepted refugees in the past."

Muslims Flee to Malaysia and Indonesia by the Hundreds - NYTimes.com

Muslims Flee to Malaysia and Indonesia by the Hundreds - NYTimes.com: "Attacks on Rohingya villages in 2012 and 2013 by Buddhist mobs in Myanmar forced more than 100,000 Rohingya into refugee camps, where most remain. The violence has abated, but anti-Muslim sentiment remains potent in Myanmar and is linked to a large political movement known as 969 that portrays Muslims as a threat to Buddhism.

The Rohingya pay smugglers to take them to Malaysia, which in recent years has turned a blind eye to their clandestine immigration.

“This is a ruthless business where smugglers will let them die to set an example for others,” said Jeffrey Labovitz, the head of the Thailand operations of the International Organization for Migration, an intergovernmental organization that is helping the refugees. “They are subject to extortion, to rape, sometimes to murder.”

The smuggling and trafficking were long aided by weak law enforcement in Thailand, a major transit point in Southeast Asia for the Rohingya and other migrants. But Thailand has responded to pressure from Europe and the United States by cracking down on officials suspected of complicity in the human-smuggling business and by raiding remote jungle camps where Rohingya were kept in bamboo cages while their families were extorted for money, Thai officials say."

Book and Weblog – Authored by Garth Turner — Greater Fool – Authored by Garth Turner – The Troubled Future of Real Estate

Book and Weblog – Authored by Garth Turner — Greater Fool – Authored by Garth Turner – The Troubled Future of Real Estate: "Consistently people underestimate the cost of ownership, because they’re blinded by trumped-up gains in house prices in a narrow slice of markets, and baffled by realtor BS. For example, RBC routinely spells out the shocking truth. Its ‘housing affordability index’ measures the amount of pre-tax household income needed to service the costs of owning a house that you bought with a (for most people) massive 25% downpayment.

Nationally that number is 42.7%, which works out to 58% of the take-home pay for the average family. That leaves 42% for food, cars, transit, clothes, kids, saving and investing. But look at the numbers in Canada’s two bubble markets: in Toronto it’s 57% of pre-tax income (73% of actual cash flow) while in Vancouver it’s 82.4% (which, astonishingly, is 97.3% of take-home pay).

It gets worse. Even once people get houses, they can’t stop dicking around with them. Inflating them. HGTVing them. Throwing their remaining cash flow at them. Borrowing to aggrandize them. Using cash that could be earning money and elevating their income, and piling it into the same asset. In other words, penalizing themselves.

Here’s some proof. The average homeowner (and remember, this includes 70% of Canadians, and virtually all of the downtrodden middle class) plans on spending $17,142 this year on home renovations. The top three expenditures are on painting, laying flooring and upgrading appliances. In contrast, the average RRSP contribution – despite the fact eight in ten people have no defined benefit pension planes – was just under $3,600. The average TFSA contribution, which allows people to invest for tax-free growth now and untaxed increases in income, is $4,800."

America’s Epidemic of Unnecessary Care - The New Yorker: "In 2010, the Institute of Medicine issued a report stating that waste accounted for thirty per cent of health-care spending, or some seven hundred and fifty billion dollars a year, which was more than our nation’s entire budget for K-12 education. The report found that higher prices, administrative expenses, and fraud accounted for almost half of this waste. Bigger than any of those, however, was the amount spent on unnecessary health-care services. Now a far more detailed study confirmed that such waste was pervasive."

Teen posts ad for "Gay Best Friend," leads to interaction with luring suspect | KATU Investigators | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather and Breaking News - Portland, Oregon: "MD Shahidul Islam, 26, was arrested Saturday Jan. 10 by St. Helens Police on charges that ranged from attempted rape and online sexual corruption of a child to luring a minor. In his first court appearance in Columbia County Circuit Court last week, Islam pleaded not guilty to all charges. He has since been released from jail.

"This can happen to anybody," the victim's dad said, who did not want to be identified for this story. "I never imagined this would have happened to one of my children."

Islam began an online relationship with the 14-year-old girl in mid-July, according to court documents and police records. The teen's parents didn't know it at the time, but she and her friends posted the ad for a "Gay Best Friend," or "GBF."

"I don't know the rationalization behind that except some of the things that is on TV nowadays," the dad continued. "I believe it was just kids being kids."

The teen's mom told investigators that someone responded to the ad, which sparked online and text conversations. In some cases, the conversations happened through Kik, a messaging app popular with teens and tweens.

In one conversation, the person stated that he was going to New York and wanted to know if the teen needed anything. She responded, "Clothes, shoes, money." The person said he could bring the teen clothes and shoes once he returned from New York, but could deliver the money now.

A few weeks later, the teen told investigators Islam drove to meet her, and her three friends, at a Scappoose Dairy Queen. When he arrived, the teen said Islam texted the group to meet him at his car. Islam then asked the teen to get into his car "so they could talk," but it must have scared the 14-year-old because court records state she ran away.

The teen's friends stayed behind and, she later told investigators, Islam gave them $40.

At some point, the teen told her parents about the online and text conversations that sprang from the Craigslist ad.

"She was pretty open and honest -- didn't try to hide anything," the dad said. "I think having that line of communication has really helped, at least through the first part of this process."

The dad said he and his ex-wife called multiple agencies, starting with Scappoose police, but said their concerns didn't go far since the initial conversations were not sexual in nature. Dad said he also called the FBI and St. Helens police, the latter agency was finally able to push the investigation forward.

The dad handed over his daughter's cellphone to a St. Helens police detective who then used the phone, posing as the teen, to send Islam a text message. According to the police report, when the conversation turned sexual, the officer asked Islam to meet him at the St. Helens Wal-Mart.

About an hour later, Islam drove into the parking lot driving a dark gray Toyota Prius, police said. Officers were standing by to arrest him. Inside his jacket pocket, the report states, police found two condoms."

Towards a Black Muslim Ontology of Resistance – The New Inquiry

Towards a Black Muslim Ontology of Resistance – The New Inquiry: "Around the same time three young Arab Muslims were murdered in their Chapel Hill home, a Somali Muslim man was shot through the door of his apartment in Fort McMurray, Alberta. While Deah, Yusor, and Razan’s deaths trended worldwide, Mustafa Mattan’s murder was barely a passing blip outside of the Somali community. In a thought-provoking article co-written by UCLA Professor Khaled Beydoun and Muslim Anti-Racist Collaborative cofounder Margari Hill entitled “The Color of Muslim Mourning,” the authors pointedly ask the Muslim community who they prioritize and why. “Deah’s fundraiser for dental supplies for Syrian refugees went from $20,000 before his death to $380,000. In contrast, Mattan’s family still is struggling to raise $15,000 for his burial costs,” they write. The reality for today’s Black Muslims is bifurcated into a war fought on two fronts: a battle with one’s own community to be seen and respected as well as a battle to resist targeted state and vigilante violence. Black Muslims are also being surveilled, detained, and harassed by state operatives with increasingly alarming regularity. As Muslims, and as politically concerned citizens, we know the name of someone like Omar Khadr. How many of us can say the same of Mahdi Hashi, a Somali British national who has been stripped of citizenship and currently rots away in detention in Manhattan after refusing to spy on other Muslims? The Muslim community’s disinterest in his case speaks to the violence of what Frank B. Wilderson has termed “anti-Black solidarity.” Even when protecting his community, Hashi remains invisible."

Buddhism attracts new converts in China - CNN.com

Buddhism attracts new converts in China - CNN.com: "However, it's not always easy to combine Buddhist beliefs with the demands of modern life.

Zhao works as an assistant to the boss of an environmental company. His religion means it's difficult to entertain clients and partners -- a key part of the role.

"Not drinking, smoking or eating meat affects my socializing. So the company has to send someone else to go with me, which creates extra expenses," he says.

Zhao has not told his family about his desire to become a monk yet, fearing that they might oppose it."

China Passes Mexico as the Top Source of New U.S. Immigrants - Real Time Economics - WSJ

China Passes Mexico as the Top Source of New U.S. Immigrants - Real Time Economics - WSJ: "Move over, Mexico. When it comes to sending immigrants to the U.S., China and India have taken over, research being presented Friday at the Population Association of America conference shows.

China was the country of origin for 147,000 recent U.S. immigrants in 2013, while Mexico sent just 125,000, according to a Census Bureau study by researcher Eric Jensen and others that analyzed annual immigration data for 2000 to 2013 from the American Community Survey. (An “immigrant” here is any foreign-born person in the U.S. who lived abroad a year prior, regardless of legal status, though undocumented immigrants may be undercounted in the survey.) India, with 129,000 immigrants, also beat Mexico, though the two countries’ results weren’t statistically different from each other.

A year earlier, in 2012, Mexico and China had been basically tied for top-sending country—with Mexico at 125,000 and China at 124,000.

It’s not just China and India. Several of the top immigrant-sending countries in 2013 were from Asia, including South Korea, the Philippines and Japan.

For a decade, immigration to the U.S. from China and India, which boast the world’s biggest populations, has been rising. Meanwhile, immigration from Mexico has been declining due to improvements in the Mexican economy and lower Mexican birth rates. More recently, the Great Recession also reduced illegal immigration from Mexico."
